Appetite: Customizing the Front Page template

The Front Page template has six sections:

  • Featured Content
  • Featured Page #1
  • Featured Page #2
  • Featured Page #3
  • Recent Blog Posts
  • Random Testimonials

All sections are optional except the Featured Content section.

Featured Content

The Featured Content section is only available for the Front Page template.

Featured Content is displayed based on a tag you select:

  1. Navigate to Appearance → Customize → Featured Content.
  2. Add the tag you’ll use to designate which pages should be displayed in the slideshow to the text field below the Tag name label. (For example, “featured” or “slideshow.”).
  3. Add this tag to the Pages you want to display in the Featured Content section.
  4. You can have display different post summary lengths by using the More block. By default, “Read More” will appear as the text for the link, but you can change it to any title you want.

Note: This feature requires Jetpack plugin installed on your website.

Featured Pages #1, #2 and #3

These sections are optional. There are two ways to display your content in these sections; you can either have a grid layout or a regular layout.

Grid layout

  1. Head to Appearance → Customize → Theme Options → Front Featured Page #1, Front Featured Page #2 or Front Featured Page #3.
  2. Under Featured Page, select the page that has child pages from the dropdown list.
  3. Under Section Layout, choose a layout for your grid from the dropdown list.
  4. Click Publish at the top of your screen to save the changes.

Regular layout

  1. Head to Appearance → Customize → Theme Options → Front Featured Page #1, Front Featured Page #2 or Front Featured Page #3.
  2. Under Featured Page, select a regular page from the dropdown list.
  3. Under Content Position, choose the position for your page content from the dropdown list.
  4. Click Publish at the top of your screen to save the changes.

Recent Blog Posts

This section is optional. In order to display it, make it visible via the Customizer:

  1. Head to Appearance → Customize → Theme → Front Recent Blog Posts.
  2. Check Display Recent Blog Posts.
  3. By default, this section displays the title “Recent News” above the posts. You can edit this by adding your own title into the text field under Section Title.
  4. Specify how many posts you want to show per page under the Number of posts to show label.
  5. Choose a layout from the dropdown list under Section Layout.
  6. Click Publish at the top of your screen to save the changes.

Recent Testimonials

This section is optional. In order to display Testimonials section, you need to make it visible in the Customizer:

  1. Head to Appearance → Customize → Theme → Front Testimonials.
  2. Check Display Testimonials. If left checked then five random testimonials will be shown on the Front Page template.
  3. Click Publish at the top of your screen to save the changes.
